University of Kentucky Surgery Pavilion A Operating Rooms
The University of Kentucky recently opened the ARTEKNA-designed expansion to their surgery department in the Albert B. Chandler Pavilion on the UK campus in Lexington, Kentucky. The project features 5 new state-of-the-art cardiac operating rooms and a new Siemens Artis Zeego Hybrid Operating Room. The project also includes an expansion to the pre-operative and post-operative recovery space with 35 private PACU rooms, 4 dedicated nurse stations, and associated support spaces.
The design process included a thorough study of the layout of the existing operating rooms including specific locations of staff, physicians, equipment, booms, work areas, storage spaces, video integration, and sterile field needs. Further study was completed regarding preferred travel paths, work flow, room access, and patient movement. These studies resulted in a new standard for the operating suite design and layout, that, in effect, reversed the entire layout as compared to the original existing operating rooms. The PACU was designed to maximize patient flow and eliminate unnecessary steps for staff and physicians. In addition, each room includes a patient lift, a modular headwall, and zones for dedicated staff work areas and dedicated family areas. Four rooms include negative pressure capabilities and four rooms have been set up to accommodate dialysis equipment.
