Raphael Health Center HIIP Expansion
Raphael Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) located in Indianapolis. The addition was made possible, in part, by a $1 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services. The grant was administered through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the funding came from the Affordable Care Act’s Community Health Center Fund.
Raphael Health Center is recognized as a Patient Center Medical Home. This designation signifies a team approach to caregiving providing consistent, coordinated care and communication. Serving this purpose, the new addition features additional exam space for more providers, podiatry care, and optometry, as well as additional dental operatories that allow the clinic to focus on preventative care, and a community room with a teaching kitchen area.
The community room further solidifies Raphael Health Center’s role as the neighborhood care center. This spacious and light-filled room features resources and gathering space for residents and neighborhood groups, and was specially designed to allow access outside normal clinic operating hours. In addition, Raphael Health Center is located within a food desert with limited options for groceries and produce. The teaching kitchen was carefully designed to help families learn how to prepare healthy foods in healthy ways. The instructor demonstration area includes a gathering area for students and a commercial hood to facilitate multiple teaching opportunities.
This project was constructed adjacent to the ARTEKNA-designed 2005 Raphael Health Center addition. Both the 2005 addition and the 2019 addition were designed with specially selected stone from the same quarry to match the stone on the original clinic construction. The limestone accents were selected to pay homage to the adjacent Tabernacle Presbyterian Church whose congregants were instrumental in establishing the original clinic in 1994.
